Every July Chick-fil-A hosts a customer appreciation day called "Cow Appreciation Day" in which anyone who dresses up like a cow receives a free entrée.    It's a super fun event, and my kids LOVE attending it.

This year, we were so busy, I almost skipped it.  There was no way I could another thing to our schedule.

But I knew my kids would be super disappointed and…I knew that if we skipped it,  I'd actually have to Make Dinner!   Ackkkk!

So I started looking online for some easy cow appreciation costume ideas, and I came across this inspiring quote from Chick-fil-A founder, S. Truett Cathy.

ChickFilA Quote

And I thought, "We need to stop and just be silly. Take a break and have some fun."

Using printables is a super easy, time saver.

I found this adorable cow mask printable  from Six Clever Sisters and an Eat More Chikin Printable from 2 Paws Designs.

We decided to combine the two and literally created these adorable cow appreciation costumes in 15 minutes before we rushed off to camp!  I was pretty proud of our speediness.  #momwin

As I stood in line, I took an inventory of all the great creative cow craftiness that I saw.

Wow! I didn't realize there were so many ways to create cow costumes!

And they all looked pretty, darn easy!

Easy Chick-Fil-A Cow Appreciation Day Costumes

Before I present my list, REMEMBER…

The point of Cow Appreciation Day is to have Fun!   So, whatever you do—DO NOT,

I repeat,

DO NOT Stress over the costume!

Think Black and White cow spots and you're good.

Seriously!

Everything is based around black and white spots.

You don't have to go that route, but if it helps you simplify, then use it.

And now…the list of super easy Cow Appreciation Day Costumes

1) Black t-shirt layered under white shirt.

Simply cut holes in a white t-shirt, then layer it on top of a black t-shirt so the wholes look like black spots.  Done!

2) White Plastic Garbage Bag with Cow Spots

This might actually be my favorite idea, and I think I might steal it for next year!  It's super easy, super affordable and it's a natural bib if the kids spill!  #loveit!!

To get this look take a white garbage bag, and just cut out holes for your head and arms.  Then grab a black marker and draw big black circles all over to look like a cow.

Creative tip: make the circles curvy and uneven so they look more like real cow spots.

3) White T-Shirt with Black Spots

Take a white t-shirt and cover with black cow spots.  There are a few different ways to approach this:

  1. Make black spots out of construction paper and tape them on
  2. Draw black spots with magic marker
  3. Paint black spots with washable paint

4) Stylish Cow—wear black and white polka dot clothes

This is a great option if you're coming straight from work. I saw several moms wearing nice black and white polka dot dresses.

Remember—anything Black and White counts.

You could also add an easy Eat More Chikin sign —pin it to your shirt or punch 2 holes in it, attach some ribbon, and wear it around your neck.

4) Face Paint

Grab some face paint and draw a cow face.

Step 1:  Use white face paint to cover the whole face.

Step 2:  Draw black wavy circles around 1 eye, like the Chick-fil-A cow.

Step 3:  Draw a few smaller wavy circles on other parts of the face an maybe even the arms.

Step 4:  (Optional) Print out an Eat more Chikin Sign and wear around your neck.

5) Wear Paper Cow Ears

Like the White T-Shirt with Black Spots idea, this one has several execution options as well. Using black construction paper or black felt, cut out cow ear shapes and attach to the following:

  1. Attach to a headband
  2. Attach to a baseball hat
  3. Cut a white strip of paper. Wrap around the head and attach the ears to that.

6)  Make Cow Paper Plate Masks

As I mentioned at the start of this post, we created paper plate masks this year.

I simply downloaded the printable from 6 Clever Sisters, printed it out and then my daughter's and I cut them out and decorated our plates.

If I were to do this craft again, I would buy the super basic, generic white paper plates that are flimsier and don't have any sturdy coating on them. We had the thicker, more heavy duty kind in our kitchen and because of the durability—the eye holes were much harder to cut.

For full tutorial on how to make your own paper plate cow masks, check out this post from 6 Clever Sisters.

7) Wear a cute cow headband

I saw a group of teenage girls and they were all wearing matching cow headbands that they had bought at Party City.  I checked online and you can also get them from Amazon.

Know Before You Go:

Here are some more insider tips about Cow Appreciation Day.

  • It occurs in early July every summer.
  • It's crowded, of course, but the line moves very quickly.
  • Not all items on the menu are included—ex: specialty sandwiches, salad, wraps—are all excluded. But the grilled chicken IS included, if you are trying to avoid the fried items.
  • While you're waiting in line, the chick fil a cow is usually on hand to take pictures with the kiddos. It's a very festive atmosphere and you can usually count on bumping into folks you know (which makes the wait go by faster too)
